#Etat #FinancesPubliques #OrganismesCommunautaires #Philanthropie #ServicesPublics

Mark Kauzlarich for Hodinkee:

On the reverse side, I was almost more impressed. The front looks like the movement is essentially completely suspended in mid-air, but on the back, you can see that a decent amount of the mainplate work remained. It shows how carefully Grand Seiko has decided what parts to remove for the most dramatic effect. While the skeletonized bridges on the front show off the technical finishing skill you can see in things like the Credor Eichi II, the back feels more like Grand Seiko's last 64 years of horological innovation, with the double barrel power reserve running in parallel.

Seeing the new CW Twelve X, a skeletonized release from Moser, and now the GS Kodo Daybreak, I’m wondering if 2024 is the year we see a return to finely finished skeletonized watches.

Going to this concert was spontaneous. A friend said he was going and I had time. I was keen on seeing Escuela Grind. So I ordered a ticket some days before the concert. And the last one was ~5 weeks ago, so it was about time. 😅

Death Crusade, a Band from Poland. We watched them from the back. I liked the instrumental parts, but the vocals were too uninflected. For the last song, the Rotten Sound Singer came on the stage and sang some parts. Which had a nice touch to it.

Escuela Grind, they played like nothing else. It was a great concert and I had a lot of fun watching them. They are playing their ass off and you see and feel it. Despite some bad news I've read, they did an excellent concert and ended too soon. The last song they played was “one more song” after the audience screamed for more, and it had clean vocals in it. I don't know how to feel about it. Sounded strange. But ok. To each their own. It seemed all had fun, and this is the most important thing.

Escuela Grind live on stage in purple light.

Rotten Sound, quite an institution. I had a lot of fun watching these veterans. Sadly, for my taste, they played a bit too long. Maybe it was the heat in the club. It was really hot in there, and you got sweaty just from standing. But you saw that they had fun playing, which I liked. 😊

Rotten Sound live on stage in blue light.

According to my calendar, the next concert will be Asinhell on 18.09. in Berlin. 🤘

Back in 1997 I picked up a copy of the first Diablo game. I didn't get it on release and I'm not entirely sure how I learned about it because I wasn't heavily involved in any sort of gaming save for the occasional BBS door game or whatever shovelware I happened to come across. I also don't recall where I purchased it. It seems likely that it was from one of a handful of mom and pop software shops in the area.

I believe my copy still exists, save for maybe the CD. I think the box is still at my parents' house somewhere. I remember the instruction book that came with it fondly. I would carry it to school with me and read it repeatedly. I spent time sketching the various monsters that I saw in the book. I even used the names of the demons as my username in a few instances. I was enamored.

I think I only beat the game a single time. I often made it near the hell levels but never quite much further than that because my builds weren't the best. I quite enjoyed the loot slot machine and the dark atmosphere. I also remember the fright that the Butcher gave me (and countless other players, I'm sure). A couple of years later I discovered some character editors and really enjoyed making ridiculously overpowered characters just to see what was possible.

When Diablo II came out, I was quite excited. I heard about its release a little late because I wasn't in the country at the time. I was traveling abroad on an exchange program. I managed to acquire a copy probably 3 or so years after its release. The game was just as fun as its predecessor but the online component really hooked me. I fell into the diabloii.net community and that's where I learned about hardcore play.

I started rolling hardcore characters and interacting with the banana community from that now-defunct forum. I never made it to the top of the ladder or finished the game more than a couple of times but I built fond memories with the community and the loot flowed freely. I played like this on and off for several years, rediscovering the game and community each time. Occasionally I would tinker with mods like Median XL but I mostly played vanilla.

When Diablo III came out, I wasn't very excited. It looked a lot like World of Warcraft. WoW was another game I enjoyed but its overall appearance and theme wasn't suitable for the world of Sanctuary. I wanted a darker, grittier experience. I waited a while after its release and tried to play it on the PlayStation 4. I found it to be generally boring. It lacked some of the magic that the previous titles held and I couldn't put my finger on it. The one feature I loved was the inclusion of an auction house which I believe was eventually removed. It made trading a little more safe. I probably didn't spend more than a dozen hours in the game as it simply didn't grab me like the others. I did, however, appreciate an encounter with the Butcher once again.

At this point, I tried Torchlight on the recommendation of some friends but found it to be lacking the same dark gritty feeling and loot chase of the first two games. It was no better than D3 in my mind. I would occasionally revisit D2 during this time but never stuck with it for very long.

Then came Diablo Immortal which was released with heavy criticism. I didn't hear about its release announcement once again until sometime after it was already out. Perhaps a year or so after its release I picked it up and tried it out. I found that it still had the cartoony appearance of WoW, although darkened a little with lower contrast. The character models still could've easily have been lifted from Stormwind. I also found its various systems of currencies and materials to be very confusing. Combine that with the mobile game cash grab tactics and I was displeased. I played this game for a few hours and moved on (although more recently I have revisited it just to see if it had changed).

During the gap between Diablo Immortal and Diablo IV, I played Path of Exile and Grim Dawn hoping that they would be the Diablo we never had. While both games proved to be fun in their own right, they weren't quite what I was looking for. PoE came closer to it than Grim Dawn but I just didn't manage to stick with either title.

Fast forward to today: Diablo IV recently came to Game Pass. I had loosely followed the Diablo IV release but didn't really care to play it because I was worried it would be another Diablo 3 or Immortal flop. Given that it was free for now, I figured I'd try it out. I'm glad I did because I am currently really enjoying this game.

At the time of writing my main character is only around level 23 or so and I haven't finished more than three of the main storyline quests. It's dark and gritty like the first two games. The loot drops feel really good and the fights aren't a slog most of the time. I'm playing with a controller on the Xbox but that's not been much of an impediment. It took me some time to learn a lot of the new things but there is so much to do in this game.

The icing on the cake for me was bumping into my old friend: the Butcher. I was in a dungeon and he arbitrarily spawned and scared me just as much as he did when I was a kid. After he beat me to death, I found myself grinning like an idiot. I was hooked. It has its own rough edges but I'll definitely be sinking more hours into Diablo 4. It feels almost like the game we should've had after Diablo 2.

I just discovered an interesting type of limitation in my mind. Basically, whenever I am “not fully decided”, or something “isn't permanent”, I limit my perception of this. I don't fully enjoy it.

For example, we are “not fully decided” on how long we are going to continue living in this house, but definitely this “isn't permanent”.

In order to reflect this truth, I never feel “fully” at home, which involves a certain sense of permanence. But it is totally possible.

My flip phone arrived, and just like that, I'm transported back to a different time. 😌

I love retro tech, but for a phone, I knew I needed something practical. So I was excited when I learned about the Sunbeam Horizon, a more modern flip phone with a touchscreen, weather, and offline navigation. The company was founded by Mennonites, interestingly enough, folks who have a healthy skepticism around technology and its impact on our lives.

Setup went smoothly, but it's been difficult to re-establish communication with my iPhone having friends. Messages appear to go to me, but they never arrive. I've had to proactively message friends and family, tell them that things aren't coming through, and troubleshoot. Usually, deleting the prior text thread and starting over will fix the problem, but it's been a real hassle. I doubt I'll ever use iMessage again, even if I go back to an iPhone.

My new phone was expensive, so I hope it lasts.

Patrick has named it “Flippy.” 😏 Here are some notes from the transition:

Smell the Flowers

We head out for a cup of coffee and I slip Flippy into my front jeans pocket. While P and I are chatting, I think of something I want to look up online, and I reach for my iPhone, but it's not there. Right. It occurs to me that it's not that important. By the time I get home, I've forgotten what my question was. But I do remember the pink roses on the cafe table. Scraps of overheard conversation. The damp chill of the morning air.

Later, I am working. An indicator light on top of my phone is glowing green. It looks like a tiny envelope. A missed text message? By the time I check my phone, there are two messages waiting. I hold down the text button and speak into my microphone to reply to one of them. The voice-to-text service punctuates the sentence correctly, including commas. Neato, I think.

POW!

I wake up and get out of bed. Flippy's outer screen is dark. No calls or texts came in during the night. Unsurprising. Before I get dressed, I flip the phone open and enter my pin. Two quick key presses later, I'm looking at live weather information. It's windy outside. I'll wear my warm hat, I think. I snap the phone closed. I like the snapping. POW. It feels like shutting a door. Like closing a book after you've looked up the information you need.

We're on the go, and we want to buy a squeegee for the shower. What time does the hardware store open? I open the Here Navigation app and search for 'Hardware.' The results are a simple text list, sorted by proximity. It's nothing fancy, but the store hours are right there. The hardware store isn't open yet, so we walk to Target. I close the cover. POW.

Neither Apple nor Google have any information about my location or what I've searched for. If my cell provider wants to know where I am, they'd have to triangulate my position off the towers.

I am a free agent today. It feels good.

Backup

I'm having a colonoscopy in a few hours, and I've been up since 2:30am drinking the devil's lemonade. I've memorized my health plan number, but I put it in the “notes” section of my flip phone in case I have a brain fart. I suspect there will be a great deal of farting today, regardless.

I throw my iPhone in my purse as backup. It has a cheap data plan on it ($39/yr) so I can use it for things like ride share or downloading e-tickets. P will call us a taxi later, so I probably won't need it, but it feels good to have the option on a stressful day.

The Good with the Bad

I take a photo of a menu posted outside a restaurant. The camera is a potato maker. The picture, blurry and small. I knew this going in, but it belatedly occurs to me that I've become immune to QR codes. My phone can't even read them, and it has no web browser. Not even a crummy one.

One sandwich spot downtown asks you to go to a website on your phone to input your table number after you sit down. The seats are like 10 feet from the counter, but walking a sandwich across the room requires a web 3.0 solution, apparently. I imagine holding up my flip phone like a sacred relic, watching faces melt like the bad guys in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Awake

We're at a coffee shop and the line is long. I eavesdrop on the gaggle of firemen waiting for their drinks. They've ordered foo-foo espressos, and this amuses me for some reason. I feel self conscious looking around, probably because everyone else is either talking to someone or staring at their phone. Who is this freak with her head up, curious about the world?

The coffee is good. Hot and foamy. I take a small paper notebook and pencil out of my back pocket to jot down a grocery list as P and I talk about what we need. It's surprisingly fast to work this way. No unlocking, swiping, opening, backspacing around. By the time we get to the store, I don't need the list. It's in my brain, but I check it anyway, not trusting myself.

Memory Returning

Is it just me, or is my brain starting to hold information more tightly? I'm more aware of the day of the week, when my next appointment is, and so on. My calendar is on my laptop, so when I look at it, I take note of the next few days. And I guess it's easier to remember things when you know there's a need to? I'm working on memorizing my library card number. My credit card number. Heck, my debit card pin. I'm always forgetting it.

It's a small thing, to not be so reliant on reminders. But I like it.

Feeling It

I am across town, waiting, and a sad song is playing. I'm thinking of my father. He was a music nerd, and I'm sure he would have loved this song. We never reconciled before he died, and I feel that old familiar ache. I feel sad, I think. But it's okay. The music brings him back to me, despite everything, and I find that I don't mind. It's been a while.

Later, I'm thinking about the places my mind goes when I'm not shoveling stimulus in front of it. The mind observes, and it wanders, and sometimes it takes me places I didn't expect. So too does my heart roam around, revealing an inner landscape. This is what I've been missing out on, I think.

Bye

The voice-to-text feature is so fast and easy that I've been using it to send texts. Only I keep reflexively saying “bye” at the end, then I have to go in and backspace over the word, because no one ends their texts with bye. P finds this hilarious. Now, I say “bye” and “dammit!” and end up backspacing over both words. I have no more emojis, and I miss my emojis, but you'll have to pry my flip phone out of my cold, dead hands.

Anyway, thanks for reading my blog post. I'm headed back into my novel, but I suppose I should check my email too, as I'm no longer notified of anything. New habits! I can't complain. This is all pretty fantastic.

Bye! Dammit.

So I wanted a bit more. For private projects, I use prisch.io. Which is privacy-friendly and hosted in Germany. I will try this out. If it is not working as expected, I will remove the script.

How can you implement such a script?

First, go to your pirsch.io Dashboard and click the + Icon on the top-right.

Add a new website to your pirsch.io Dashboard

You will be asked between Client or Server implementation. Go to Client implementation and copy the script tag.

<script defer src="https://api.pirsch.io/pa.js"
    id="pianjs"
    data-code="YOUR_SITE_CODE"></script>

Now, transfer this HTML into JavaScript. Here we create a new element and add it to the document <head />.

// Add prisch tracking --- START
const script = document.createElement('script');
script.setAttribute('id', 'pianjs');
script.setAttribute('defer', true);
script.setAttribute('src', 'https://api.pirsch.io/pa.js');
script.setAttribute('data-code', 'YOUR_SITE_CODE');
document.head.appendChild(script);
// Add prisch tracking --- END

This snipped can be added to your write.as blog. Go to your write.as Dashboard and select the Customize Button. Here is an area where you can add custom JavaScript.

Add custom JavaScript to Write.as

Hit “Save changes” and reload your blog. The script should now be added. :)

I hope this will help someone.

Last year in December, I posted a few Fediverse suggestions for Flipboard, one which they adopted (to my delightful surprise).

Some of these ideas came to my mind after @mike@flipboard.social (CEO of Flipboard) was gracious enough to activate ActivityPub upon my account (my handle is @darnell@flipboard.com for those in the Fediverse).

Other ideas came after seeing what other platforms are doing, ironically leading to my first suggestion.

Mastodon plush in chair

Easy On The Eyes

Last month, @Gargron@mastodon.social (founder of Mastodon) unveiled a cute, squeezable plush toy to the world.

After we've released our new line of merch last year, we've heard a lot of questions about a potential stuffed toy. After all, our official mascot is so suitable. But it is, problematically, a two-dimensional character.

We sat down with our artist, Dopatwo, to try and imagine what a character like that could look like in three-dimensional space. We had only three requirements: He would have to be cute, he would have to be cuddly, and he would have to be round. And Dopatwo delivered.

We created a stuffed toy of the highest caliber. Deliberately friend-sized and friend-shaped, with a soft surface material and soft, squishy stuffing, the toy measures a height of 35cm. Perfect as a travel companion you can rest your head on, or to fill in for you at business meetings. (Mastodon Blog)

Mastodon plush on business table

Even though I do not need a Mastodon plush toy, I wanted one & was annoyed that it was not available to order! 😂 Note: I blame you for this, Eugen! 🤣😂 Yes, I did sign up to be alerted when they are available for sale.

If I order this plush toy successfully, I intend to put a mini t-shirt around him featuring the Mastodon logo and my Mastodon handle: @darnell@one.darnell.one (feel free to use this t-shirt idea Mastodon team).

Envious eyes aside, I believe Flipboard needs to develop a cute mascot that represents the company's brand. Perhaps an animal that reflects the beauty, intelligence, versatility, & fun of Flipboard, who can also capture an outsider's attention. After further pondering, one animal came to mind:

https://youtu.be/IY7g1JCfRgk

Flipboard should consider making their brand animal ambassador a dolphin 🐬! Dolphins🐬 are delightful creatures & to help distinguish Flipboard's dolphin 🐬 from others, they could put on a red t-shirt (featuring the Flipboard logo) & bless the dolphin with the name Flippy (at least until a better name is selected).

Flipboard could offer this plush toy for sale (along with custom username t-shirts for an extra fee) to their 100 million plus active users, which could help promote the company to outsiders unfamiliar with the Fediverse, or Flipboard.

https://youtu.be/m_MaJDK3VNE

Domain Grouping‽

One issue some Fediverse folks (especially popular accounts) may experience is being overwhelmed by responses from the Fediverse. An excellent solution is to group responses by instance if numerous ones are coming from one server.

If a post becomes (in)famous on Threads or Mastodon Social, the notifications section will be drowned out by a few large instances, preventing a user from easily seeing responses elsewhere.

If Flipboard was able to group instances based upon domain together, it could also help users sort through responses, especially from other platforms that may boast smaller numbers (but whose input is equally valid).

https://youtu.be/fW85-G2fpug

Local Level Domain Blocking

If someone harasses a Flipboard citizen, they can simply block the individual account. But what happens when users from a particular instance begin to swarm an account in an attempt to overwhelm & frighten a user for posting something political (a sad reality in our day & age)?

Instead of appealing to Flipboard admins to block a domain, users could block an entire domain themselves, silencing an onslaught from a potential army of trolls & zombies.

Flipboard could then monitor when domain blocks are used by users, which would make it easier for the team to moderate the Flipboard community as users would be able to identify bad actors coming from bad places.

https://youtu.be/UtaMA1eQyDs

Manage Premium Subscriptions

I subscribe to several premium outlets, & whenever I encounter one on Flipboard, I am usually greeted with a few paragraphs, then a scary pop-up requiring me to log in or open the official news app to continue reading (I usually do the latter, exiting Flipboard altogether).

A great alternative would be securely logging in to our favorite premium subscriptions within the app or online. Once securely logged in, whenever we encountered multiple premium posts within Flipboard from different news outlets, we would immediately be logged into our accounts, allowing us to access the rest of the articles in peace.

As a bonus, Flipboard could recommend other premium media outlets of interest to us, & potentially earn a commission from referring a happy customer to a news agency.

https://youtu.be/5ixeVbrMW-o

Unlocking Treasure I May Not Need

Sometimes, I encounter a premium article whose news services I prefer not to subscribe to (as it primarily offers me nothing of value). However, occasionally, they provide valuable insight, which I would find beneficial, but only if I subscribe to their service.

Instead of wasting money on an annual or monthly subscription to a news agency, I will probably never read 99% of the time; it would be beneficial if Flipboard could offer a non-refundable, one-time access fee to view the article.

Flipboard could split the revenue between themselves, the news agency & Apple/Google (Apple & Google will demand a mobile tax, of course!). This would benefit everyone, especially media companies seeking new ways to pay their bills.

https://youtu.be/3UunQXXxAWY

Any Other Suggestions‽

This article is long enough, so I will end it here. However, I believe Flipboard is in a unique position to influence ActivityPub platforms in the Fediverse and make reading news fun again for the masses.

If anyone else has any other suggestions for the Flipboard team, feel free to ping @Flipboard@flipboard.social with any other tips on how they can improve the future heavy weight of the Fediverse.

Great scoop by @techcrunch@threads.net, who confirmed that Instagram is experimenting with auto-posting to the Fediverse via Threads.

Earlier today, users shared that they saw control for cross-posting on their Instagram accounts. Users could cross-post an individual post to turn on the feature for all of them.

Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that it is running a global test to let users cross-post images from Instagram to Threads. That means you can't post Reels to Threads automatically. [...]

The company said that this is an opt-in experience, and you can turn it off at any point in time. (TechCrunch)

According to @TechCrunch@mstdn.social, Meta previously enabled Facebook users to automatically cross post upon Threads.

This latest move could be a way for Meta to use Threads to thwart any potential ActivityPub powered rivals in the Fediverse (like Pixelfed, Friendica & WordPress).

@mosseri@threads.net has already hinted that Instagram will power Threads private messages in the future. This makes me wonder what other features Instagram will flirt with within the Fediverse‽ (my guess is live streaming, but @zuck@threads.net could have different ideas)

from An Open Letter

Today I made a couple of new friends by just betting on their match and just hyping them up and having fun. Life really isn’t that hard. I also have a date soon with a cute girl, and I think we’re going to do something artsy.

R – 3 breaths

E – I am sleeping later and later each day, and I am waking up later to compensate.

S – I should start getting ready for bed around 11pm.

T – Go get ready to sleep.

from Correspondencias Ocultas
